Why You Should Learn a Foreign Language

1. It is a good exercise for your brain
numerous studies on the subject have shown that those who learn/speak more than one language have better memory, are able to pay attention for a longer amount of time and have a relatively reduced decline risk of age-related cognition.

2. It will help you establish cross-cultural friendships.
Who doesn’t want to meet new people and make new friends? this might be a little hard if you don’t know each other’s mother tongues. here is where the second language comes in handy. not only will it help you to communicate with a native speaker of the language, learn more about the language itself and the culture, but it will also be a great practice opportunity for you

3. it will improve your learning skills
the more you learn, the better you get at it. the first foreign language might seem hard, but with a bit of a practice and grammar, you’ll be surprised how much of the language you can understand and use. with each new language, you will get better at learning and will know which learning method works for you the best.

4. you can read literature in the original language
whether your chosen second language is an international one or a minor language it doesn’t matter. there is always an original artwork to explore in any language and culture. language learning will give you the opportunity to explore a whole new culture. there might be some good translations out there, but still the original version is undoubtedly better.

Why You Should Travel Solo

Travelling alone is becoming more and more usual than ever. In fact, lots of people, myself included, prefer solo traveling a lot more.

Why?

Here are some reasons that I came up with.

1.Traveling alone makes you more independent

While traveling with your friends you don’t necessarily do everything on your own and you know if something goes wrong your friends or family members are there to help you. You always consult with your travel buddies about where to go, what to do, where to go, how much money to spend. Whereas when alone, you are the only decision maker, which is both exciting and scary at the same time.

2.Discovering yourself

Solo traveling helps you learn a lot about yourself. In your hometown, you are almost always surrounded with family, friends, coworkers which does not leave you much space to learn about yourself, about how you will act when you have no support, advice from these people. You get to know your own weaknesses and strengths, likes and dislikes. You learn about your fears and learn to face them.

3.Meeting new people

Of course, you can still meet new people when traveling with others, but if you travel alone you’ll look more approachable. This is a great opportunity to meet with some locals, learn more about their culture and ask for some advice while in the area, as well as meeting other travelers and exploring the country together. Just because you travel alone, doesn’t mean you have to be alone all the time. It just means that you put yourself in a completely different environment than that which you’re used to. And this leads me to my next point.

4.Developing communication skills

Every country, every region varies in terms of its ways of communication. Travelling alone puts you in a kind of situation where you have no choice but to interact with others, to get the address right, to ask for some cheap local places to eat, etc. Communication is the key in every aspect of life and solo traveling gives you the opportunity to practice and improve your social skills.

5.It’ll raise your confidence

Facing new challenges and accomplishing something new, even trifle, will make you feel proud of yourself. Whether you could manage your expenses right, were able to make new local friends or faced your fear and tried diving with the sharks for the first time, it is worth being proud of.

Spoken Word Poetry

Lots of people think that poetry needs to be those long, lyrical verses with fancy vocabulary and complicated structures. poetry has evolved massively throughout centuries. from those long lyrical poems to shorter ones, from rhymed to prose poetry. and now as it has been adjusted to the contemporary needs, it has bloomed in several other styles as well. one of them is spoken word poetry. Spoken word poetry is obviously poetry that is uttered usually by the writer. it can be unplanned/freestyle or it can be written beforehand. what I like about spoken word poetry is that the writer is able to show how he/she feels about his own poem, and also is able t convert those feelings to the audience. Yes, reading poetry and interpreting it your own original way is great, but listening to poetry is just as pleasant, if not more.
As YouTube is one of the greatest platforms to share content about whatever you feel passionate about, spoken word poetry also found its place here. one of my favorite spoken word poets that has acquired quite a decent amount of viewers is a YouTuber called Taz. She makes videos performing her poetry about love, relationships, boredom and just everyday issues. She raises awareness of issues that need to be paid more attention. She does this in a very simple yet poetic language. Her spoken word poetry seems very natural and she performs them very authentically.
I think that this relatively new style of poetry is a great “alternative” to the traditional poetry reading and has yet a long way to progress and become more prominent.

“Cash Me Outside” From a Misbehaving Teen to a Successful Rapper

Danielle Marie Bregoli-Peskowitz (born March 26, 2003), aka Bhad Bhabie is an American rapper. She first became famous for the “cash me  outside, howbow dah?” phrase, on an episode of Dr. Phil in September 2016. “I Want To Give Up My Car-Stealing, Knife-Wielding, Twerking 13-Year-Old Daughter Who Tried To Frame Me For A Crime” Said Danielle’s mother at Dr. Phil’s show.

Apparently her mother was sick of Danielle’s behavior and wanted to give up on her. At the show Danielle tries to look cool, seem careless about what is happening but Dc. Phil gets more and more into her real feelings and discloses her (not the easiest task).

When Danielle speaks the audience laughs and she refers to the women sitting there by swearing to them and adds: “Cash me outside” to mean that she is ready to fight and then we’ll see who’s laughing.

After that Danielle claims that she had got lots of hate comments and been bullied on Instagram because of how she talked to Dr. Phil and to the audience. According to her this hate was both good and bad and she decided to keep on developing her social media account. Also, at another Dr. Phil episode Danielle mentioned that she wanted to become an artist, which a year later she succeeded in.

Now she is known as Bhad Bhabie as a rapper and has millions of views and fans. Though the fame had brought itself a new set of scandals and fights for Danielle, most of which unsurprisingly are caused by her.

Do You Speak Kardashian ?

kim vogueThough some people may think that Kardashians are really famous because of nothing, they managed to turn their entertainment/business (whatever you wanna call it) into a billion-dollar business. Keeping up with the Kardashians gives us a little (sometimes even more than we need) insight into their lives and also the usage of vocab. Their word use sometimes seems quite weird and sometimes funny, I’ll stick to the weird.

That being said, let’s see some of the Kardashian slang

Bible- you may think they refer to it, saying some quote from the bible or something. Well, this is not the case. They use the word when they say something that’s actually true or honest.

Okurrr- not sure what this one means, but could be a hybrid of okay and sure.

Peasants- this is Kourtney Kardashian’s husband Scott Disick’s word which he refers to normal people. Basically, anyone that’s not him.

Shady- something that is sketchy, not clear or suspicious

Rude- a word that the sister overuse especially while arguing

As you can see, there are some words that definitely do not make sense to us, but some people think this is cool to create your own family slang. If we think a bit, all of us do have family slang or friends slang. Well, not as popular as Kardashians’ slang, at last, we’re just peasants.

The Modern Monk from London

The modern monk from London
This is how people usually call him. This is what usually stands out about him at first, that he is a former monk residing in London- smart, young and a monk by his own choice. So why?
Now don’t think he was one of those smart kids who got straight A at school, not at all. Shetty was, in fact, a rebellious kid, eager to try new things, get himself into troubles, use cocaine and alcohol. Yet this crazy guy had a lot of questions about the world- why we do what we do, about people, himself. And fortunately for him, the path to the exploration of these questions came right to his direction.
Once there was a monk who was going to give a speech in their college and Shetty’s friend convinced him to go. This was the start of the journey he had been longing for all his wild years. this was the day Shetty decided to become a monk and follow the path of his mentor. So he went to India with this monk and every summer until graduation spent with him, learning about the monk life, living as a monk. Shetty meditated for about 6 hours per day, woke up at 2 am, read the ancient Buddhism books which according to him are very directly connected to the current world.
After graduating the college he goes to India to become a full-time monk for two years and completely immerses himself into the monk lifestyle. Shetty says: “I wanted to have the ability to control and realize my emotions as well as they do, so I imitated every step of them”.
After a couple of years, he comes back to the UK to preach what he has learned. And he does this by adjusting his teachings to today’s needs– social media. Now Shetty has over 9 million of Facebook followers and over 200k Instagram and over 400K YouTube followers where he posts videos and images about relationships, forgiveness, love, hate, help, sympathy, happiness, etc.
He says his aim is to make social media a platform for learning, developing and growing, and reduce its boring, deteriorating usage.

“The Color Purple” book review

“The Color Purple” by Alice Walker is one of the most touching and emotional books I have ever read. The book has been sold with more than a million copies only in the UK and it is considered one of the greatest classics of literature.

The main character of the story is a girl named Celie, a young black girl who is going through lots of hardship and pain throughout his childhood and teen years. Born into poverty she is repeatedly raped by her stepfather, has two children which get taken away from her and get trapped into a forced marriage.

Celie’s life changes when she meets a strong, powerful, glamorous woman Shug Avery who is ironically the mistress of Celie’s husband. Despite the confused circumstances these two find friendship, support, and strength in each other. Throughout the book, Celie turns from a young girl who hates and neglects herself, to a strong, confident woman who accepts herself with all her imperfections, aims for a better self and surrounds herself with the people she loves and is loved by.

The entire book is written in letters, which at first is unusual but at the same time makes one read the book faster. Alice Walker presents the story of a young black woman in a dazzlingly beautiful way and touches the issues that very often occur today as well.

“A stunning, brilliantly conceived book… a saga filled with joy and pain, humor and bitterness, and an array of characters who live, breathe and illuminate the world of black women.” -Publishers Weekly

HOW TO WRITE BETTER ASSIGNMENTS

The vast majority of students does not like writing papers that much. College may be fun, but when you have lots of deadlines especially at the same time, you can’t be very happy about that. Some students get into depression because of the heavy workload and some just plan their steps ahead. So, how to write better assignments/papers?

1. Plan

Check what percentage of the final grade your assignment is, read the grading rubric carefully and the professor’s expectations and requirements. Think about what research should be done and what kind of sources you may need.

2. Brainstorm

Write anything that comes to your mind about your assignment topic. Don’t worry about structure or order, you’ll figure it out later. Brainstorming is just for seeing what ideas you have and what you can expand on later on when writing your paper.

3. Write an Outline

A good outline is a key to writing good papers. Make sure you have a strong thesis statement that is relevant to the topic you’re writing about. Also, don’t forget to write the body subtopics for each body paragraph.

4. Do your research.

Before starting to write the paper, make sure you’ve done a proper research and use those sources in your essay. Don’t forget to cite the sources you’ve used, otherwise, it will be detected as plagiarism.

5. Write

Relying on your outline expand on the main topics you’ve already written. Try to be as much exact as possible, don’t just write for meeting the word limit, your paper should make sense!!!

6. Proofread and Edit

Proofreading and editing is your last step. Read the paper carefully and check if there any grammatical, content or spelling mistakes. The last thing you want is to get a lower mark for some stupid spelling mistake.

THE TATTOO BAN IN SOUTH KOREA

Tattoo art is completely banned in South Korea. Though it does not stop younger generation practicing the art and getting a tattoo. So why is tattooing prohibited by law in South Korea?

In Asian countries, people associate tattooing with criminals, therefore it is viewed as a bad thing but not a body art as people in other parts of the world think.

Despite the law ban, young tattoo artists still practice their craft. Of course, they have to get underground but that does not seem to bother them as long as they can do what they love and consider as a way of art. If the artists get caught, they will face fines and may even get jail time.

As the number of both tattoo artists and those who get tattoos rapidly increase in South Korea, the government may consider changing their attitude towards the subject. So recently a lot of more attention has been given to this issue, both from Koreans and from foreign tattoo artists and tattoo bearers.
