Military Service: Wasting Two Years

pexels-photo-280002.jpegMilitary Service: Wasting Two Years

Nowadays many people in Armenia think that military service is the same that to waste two of best years of life. Such thoughts started occurring in our country since the beginning of 2000s, when soldiers start feeling again not protected by the Government and also it was again very dangerous in the front.

Firstly, many people argue that military service is very beneficial for every man. They believe military service causes young boys to become into men and start serving to their country and their families. After they return from the army, they are already ready for the future life and career. They can bare many difficulties and obstacles in their personal life. They are very disciplined and organized, which is very beneficial for themselves and their country.

Secondly, as the situation in the front of Armenia is quite flammable, many people argue that if some young man rejects serving in army, there is no one to add his space. The population of country is decreasing daily and every one’s absence in army is noticeable.

I would like to state my own one. I agree that there is very well established educational role in army and really after military service it is noticeable how young boys had became into man and ready for independent life. But, I think that no one is going to risk his life or health because the country’s safety, until the Government will change its attitude towards people living in the country.

Genome Editing and the Potential to Change the Human Embryo

Imagine the world where it is possible to choose the eye color, hair length, and even the intelligence level of your child. Would you choose to make your child smarter, if there would be a practice allowing you to design a baby you would like to have. While many people would consider it to be just another fairytale being far away from the reality we would not face in a comparably near future, in fact scientific and engineering developments have improved in the resent decade so much that we already have the practice through which it is possible to choice any characteristic you would like to give your future child, to be it physical or mental. This practice now is widely known as gene editing.

Gene Editing is an operation through which it is possible to insert, delete or replace any sequence of a genome of living organisms, having the absolute potential to change any desired changes in the species. It brings into the surface many possible and way too urgent solutions to such problems as the prevention or total cure of many diseases, including the ones nowadays sciences are not able to achieve in practice. However, it also brings into question the ethical, religious, and sociological issues concerning its use on human embryo, which itself would open the door for the creation of first designer babies.

While taking into consideration of all the economic and financial benefits the practice would bring in the field of gene editing on human embryo, we should also pay our attention on the social and cultural diversities the viral use of this practice would bring. Moreover, taking into consideration that many countries in the would do not even have a law concerning the possible use on genome editing on human embryo, this method of change in human genome may end up in unpreventable changes in the future of all the upcoming generations. That is why it is absolutely important to be fully educated about his practice, thus ending up in a full responsibility of the future of ourselves and the upcoming generations.

Mass Stereotyping

What can be called as stereotyping? One may bring a case of racism or the instance of following and obeying the rules and rights based on their gender. Well, right examples, but in this case, I will urge you to think small. Not always stereotyping is that obvious and prominent. Sometimes they may be small and invisible to the naked eye. The problem is deep beneath in ourselves because we tend to accept what is socially “normal” and make it a universal truth. However, not always those seemingly ordinary behaviors are the carriers of the only truth. It is important to know that truth may be as much as people would like, there is no universal truth and never was. But why stereotyping occurs and who decide the norms? Well, the judge is the Society with the capital S.

Since childhood, I frequently hear that being southpaw is wrong. Moreover, it makes a person not intellectual or smart enough, not talented enough and to all of these, it indicates that left-handed people are prone to mental health issues more than right-handed ones. This list goes on and on with left-handed people being anything, but a good. I know families that urged their child to become right-handed by using right hand in every situation because it was not socially acceptable. Even teachers warned parents to start changing the abnormality immediately. Thankfully, in my case my mother let me express myself the way I felt more comfortable with. However, even now if I am not good enough or fast enough at something that people usually tend to be, people may connect it with left-handedness. For instance, while cooking, I may not be as skilful as my mother or sister, and it may rise a thought that using left-hand to do the work is not comfortable. However, the truth is simple, a person needs time and practice to become fast, and this is about everyone.

A mass stereotyping is going on just because the percentage of left-handed people in comparison with right-handed is significantly different. Have you ever wondered, why the pen that is for “normal” people costs no more than 1 dollar, but the pen that is specially prepared for left-handed people to make them feel comfortable while writing costs no less than 5 dollars? This is only one example, in reality, everything is manufactured for right-handed people, and left-handed ones need to adapt to the world of right-handed people with their non-written rules. To have something that is produced for southpaw ones we need to pay two times more, while both hands need to be considered normal and acceptable.

This world should not give one type of person all the right and all the pluses while leaving the other types with nothing. Being a minority is not an abnormality, it is the way people are born. It is a natural process not to meet society’s expectations. We do not live for the society, we live for ourselves, and we must choose out of all the truths which one is best suitable for us.

What it Feels Like to be “Yerevanci”: Exploring The “Love Songs” of Yerevan

“Come in, come in, why are you standing there with the stupid smile on your face? This is Yerevan; here you are at home, where they wait for you and haven’t forgotten you yet. Here they either love you or curse you by reminding your past.” (Rouben Haxverdyan)

Would you ever think that these words are from one of the most romantic and beautiful songs about Yerevan? When thinking about songs that are dedicated to cities we usually imagine the ones that praise the beauty of the town and where love is the overwhelming feeling that rules the entire song. The “Yerevan songs,” are more real. They are not singing about the utopic and magical place. They are singing about the real Yerevan that we see every day, with all its problems, with all its sadness and still with its indescribable warmness and beauty. Some of these songs, such as Rouben Haxverdyan’s “In the nights of Yerevan” even dare to call the city “dirty,” but it feels so authentic that no one wants to remove the word. In the same way, most of the Forsh’s songs (the old ones), while having lyrics which praise the city, still have this deep sadness in the melody. All of these songs show conflicting feelings of each citizen. They show both the good and the bad sides of the city, and that is why they touch our hearts.

After all, the Malkhas’s “Yerevan Jan,” which seems to carry the soul of Yerevan, is filled with melancholy and happiness at the same time. That is why, for a few minutes, it seems to the listener that Yerevan is in front of his eyes and is telling its story. This is how the great “city-songs” are made: they bring the city to life.

4 Questions to Discover the Meaning of Your Life

Have you ever questioned the reason of your everyday activities: your work, hobbies, the major you have chosen to study? Have you ever thought what the purpose of your life is? What are you living for?

If you have, then you will be interested in ikigai. It’s a Japanese word which means a reason to live or a reason to get up in the morning. Ikigai is what makes your life valuable, provides you with satisfaction and fulfillment. Essentially, ikigai is what you should devote your life to. However, you don’t have to stick to a single ikigai forever; it can alter throughout your life. The idea behind this is to provide you with everyday joy, which will result in a lifelong fulfillment. E.g. sportsmen may need to find a new ikigai as their retirement age approaches.

Okay, all of these sound cool. But how can you find your ikigai? Well, there are four questions you should answer:

  1. What do you love?
  2. What are you good at?
  3. How can you bring value to the world?
  4. What can you be paid for?

The coinciding answers are your ikigai. The diagram below provides a good visualization of finding your ikigai.

ikigai

The fourth question, however, is more popular in the western interpretations of ikigai. The Japanese believe that money is not a significant factor. I personally agree with this idea: if you do something well, enjoy it, and bring value to the world, then there will be ways you can be paid for it. After all, if people can be paid for cuddling pandas, then they can be paid for anything. 🙂

The Happiest University in the World

maxresdefault

People waste most of their lives trying to find answers to different questions, such as “What the meaning of life is?”, “How to create a time machine?”, or “What is happiness?”. On their journey of finding the answer to the last question people spend a huge amount of time and forget to actually enjoy life and earn happiness of it. All this pointless search of happiness starts from university. Students are getting acquainted with adult life, responsibilities and problems. Many aspects of student life are stressful, such as exams, studying and working at the same time. It all continues after graduating too. Full time work, family and kids in the future. One needs excellent time management skills. So why not solving the problem before it starts? The University of Yale suggests a great solution. At the beginning of the spring term 2018 professor Laurie Santos started offering a class called “Psychology and the Good Life”, or the class of “Happiness” as many students started calling it soon. The idea of “teaching” happiness was first noticed on the American television sitcom “Community”. On the third episode of the first season one of the characters was looking for an “easy A” class and found the class of “Happiness”. However, it soon turned out, that being happy was not that easy. Mrs. Santos also doesn’t think that her class is very easy, however, it surely is one of the most interesting classes at Yale as currently 1182 students are enrolled. It is nearly the one-fourth of Yale undergraduates.merlin_132895217_ea977bc4-e7d3-42b6-909e-22776efbbdcf-superJumboDuring the classes Mrs. Santos tries to teach how to lead a happier life. Here’s my recipe of happiness, live every moment as it is the last moment of your life. Life is a minute, don’t lose a second.

Pawsitive Rescue Armenia

A group of people, full of enthusiasm and care, few years ago established none profit organization which would serve as a shelter for hundreds of homeless and poor dogs that need warmth and care. Pawsitive Rescue Armenia team carry the responsibility of many dogs on its shoulders giving not only shelter them but also recur and maintain their life.

23794946_1554526091293030_65185106831176544_n

Being a volunteer of that NGO I can surly claim that they do not differentiate dogs, and treat them equally, regardless of their type and condition. Since our government does not feel any responsibility toward those poor animals the young team of this NGO realizes very important mission of protecting these street animals from outside violence and hunger. Within the shelter they gradually sterilize these creatures and provide them with medical attention and assists with adoption by giving opportunity to people to adopt healthy and pure animals.

By this kind of job they propagate people to change their stereotypes that breed dogs are the only once who are worthy enough to stay in our houses and be the member of the family. Many amazing dogs that were somewhere on the streets afraiding street violence and suffering hunger are being adopted every day by the people who are ready to forget about their own problems and put their whole time and strength on one issue: to build a better future for those animals who just need their care and who can give them only one thing: their love.

Why The Killing of a Sacred Deer and mother! should be your favorite double feature

Great artists have probably struggled with a creeping sense of vanity taking over their creative process, which, certainly leads to abuse of power without the fear of facing the repercussions. What is interesting is how both Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Darren Aronofsky’s mother! are prophetic of what eventually and rightfully happened as everyone thought 2017 could not get any worse, the avalanche of the MeToo movement.hero_Mother-TIFF-2017

Both movies criticize the inflated ego of contemporary masculinity using narratives as old as the Bible and Greek mythology. Aronofsky’s phantasmagoric story of an aloof woman struck by inexplicable situations is evocative of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, another film that was a reaction to the misogynistic and abusive tendencies of privileged men. While both movies are very uncomfortable to watch in their own right, they paint a striking picture of what is wrong with the modern Man.

Twin-Peaks-Fire-Walk-With-Me-david-lynch-11154789-720-405

In mother! we are introduced to a gaslighting husband who only cares about his art which consequently destroys his wife, the mother of creation and destruction. The part played by Jennifer Lawrence in the film may be described as a stand-in for the artists’ muse, the element they need to milk to achieve greatness or appreciation. The gradual escalation of violence and anger towards the main character in the film mirrors the response to actresses who peaked too soon and were marginalized or criticized for being “ambitious”, which is exactly what has been happening to the main star of the film since she won an Oscar back in 2013.

the-killing-of-a-sacred-deer-ksd_02198_rgb-3000

In The Killing of the Sacred Deer, Lanthimos paints a picture of a man incapable to take responsibility for his horrible mistake, which brings the impending doom on his family. Similar to the Aronofsky film, the movie borrows the structure of a biblical narrative, leaving the audience in search for their own interpretation. The Kubrickian horror unravels to be a very dark comedy about the vulnerability of irresponsible men unable to confront the aftermath of divine justice. As both mother! and The Killing of a Sacred Deer illustrated, not everything can be forgiven, and sometimes revenge is a dish served so hot, it may give Harvey Weinstein explosive diarrhea.

My Favorite Living Royals

You might be surprised that there are still several princesses and queens around the worlds that live the fairy tale lives of our dreams. This time I would like to share with you some of my favorite living female royals whom I truly admire.

  • Queen Letizia of Spain

(Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

To my interest, the queen holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, and a master’s degree in audiovisual journalism. She also has worked for several news channels as a journalist and news anchor before her marriage to King Filip IV of Spain, then the Princes of Asturias. What I like most about the queen is her classy yet modest look and her confident stance. She is the embodiment of a strong and elegant woman.

  • Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden

Her royal highness is the first child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and next in-line to the Swedish throne. Unlike other royals she is not really into fashion and claims that her sister, Princess Madeleine, helps

with the choice of her outfits. Her character interests me the most. She seems a very energetic and warm hearted person who is truly committed to the well being of the Swedish people.

She is the sister of Crown Princess Victoria and known as one of the most beautiful princesses in the world. She looks like a real princess of fairy tales with her beauty, nice look, and grace. She often  wears pastels which go in perfect harmony with her dark blond hair and charming blue eyes.

  • Queen Maxima of the Netherlands

Originally from Argentina, she is the wife of the Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. What attracts me most about her is her attractive style full of vibrant colors and her always smiling face that suggests her modesty and friendliness.

Next station is Neverwhere….

Dark, gloomy, furious London with its own demons and a secret underground world which willingly welcomes fallen people who unfortunately are not that happy to appear there.

If you are interested than you are welcome to read “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman. Notice, that it is not a book for everyone. You should definitely be a bold one not to throw up when main evil characters charmingly enjoy eating a yummy rat or a bug.

Still interested?

Well, the book will open a new world where you have never been before. You will meet heroes, monsters, talking animals and a lot of strange people and non people that you can not even think of; hunters,a girl with a name “Door,”ordinary scared pure boy, kings and even an angel with a name of London’s underground stations. The plot is very absorbing and attractive, the story is easy to track. It keeps you alarmed all the time because you do not know exactly when behind one of the corners of a tunnel a creepy creature will crinkle and scare you to death.

Even though the story of the book seems spooky, in reality, it is not that dark. The main character, Richard keeps a reader on a real side of life as he is as afraid and confused as a reader. That is why it attracts and can become a world where you would like to appear some day.

For me, “Neverwhere” stands closely next to the Hogwarts…
